What is the GATE Program?
The Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program is a program that identifies and provides educational services for students who demonstrate exceptional abilities in a variety of areas:

IdentificationThe program uses a variety of methods to identify gifted students, including testing, teacher and parent nominations, and out-of-group achievement tests.

CurriculumGATE programs provide challenging curriculum that allows students to make continuous progress.

InstructionGATE programs modify curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of gifted students.

SupportGATE programs provide counseling and support for gifted students, and involve parents in the planning and evaluation of the program.
The GATE Program was established in California in 1980 by Assembly Bill 1040. Local educational agencies (LEAs) are responsible for setting their own criteria for identifying gifted students.
