Mr. Arevalo's class held a Mystery Skype with new friends in Irvine, CA!

Mr. Arevalo’s students engaged in a Mystery Skype with Mrs. Greig’s 4th-grade classroom out of Irvine, California. The goal was to be the first class to guess the other’s location by asking questions and doing research to unlock clues. Students had to work together, problem-solve, and use Google Maps to find the location of the mystery class. Ultimately, Mr. Arevalo’s class was victorious! It was a great experience. 1st Grade Takes on Measurement!

First Grade practiced using standard and non-standard units of measure today. They worked together in teams using cubes, paper clips, footsteps, and inches to record how long their teammate is. Great team work guys!! (Click the title above for pictures.)

1st grade travels to Farm Smart at the Desert Research and Extension Center!

On Wednesday, March 13th, Mrs. Wray, Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Gray took their classes to the Desert Research and Extension Center in Holtville to spend the day at Farm Smart learning about water conservation, different soils, Imperial Valley crops and harvesting. 4th Grade Celebrates Gold Rush Days!

Each year, fourth grade students participate in Gold Rush Days by moving between classrooms for different 1949 activities: churning butter, panning for gold, and eating chili and cornbread. Click the link above for pictures of the big day!

See's Candy distribution has begun!

See's Candy is delivered and organized during Thanksgiving break. Distribution will begin on Monday, 11/27 with kindergarten and work up through 8th grade. Large orders too heavy for students to carry can be picked up by parents in the Corfman gym.

Feel free to customize and personalize your yearbook for an additional cost. Yearbooks can also be purchased through either school office for $35. Kinder students wandered the McCabe campus on Thursday, November 9th in a desperate search for the Gingerbread Man! He ran into the office, through the halls, and into the cafeteria before the children found him hiding in their classrooms!

4th grade builds a city in Mr. Arevalo's class!

A new city called Greenville was being established. The city wanted to get all of their energy from renewable energy, specifically wind energy. Thus, companies (student teams) had to create a functional windmill with a budget of $500.00. As such, students got to work on STEM and financial literacy at the same time. After windmills were created, they had to develop an advertisement as well. Then, they had to present their product to the rest of their peers and staff members. Finally, we tested their windmills with fans. SUCCESS!!

3rd Graders Learn to Compare and Contrast with a Pumpkin Project!

On October 31st, Mrs. LeBaron's class did a math and literacy pumpkin project...who knew learning could be this much fun! The students described the pumpkins' inside and outside, compared and contrasted each other's pumpkins, and drew diagrams of our pumpkins. Then we estimated, counted, and rounded ALL the seeds. A messy, yet fun project indeed!

Red Shoe Day for Children's Hospital raised a total of $1,811.01! (click here for more pictures)

Under the direction of Mrs. Mair and Mr. Brown, McCabe's Student Council President Mehar Singh and her team amped up the excitement with music and dancing as they greeted parents and students in the morning and afternoon car lines on Wednesday, October 18th. The students collected spare change in support of Children's Hospital. The funds collected will help Imperial Valley parents and children with expenses incurred while their child undergoes medical assistance. Even Mrs. Partida got in on the action!!

Students celebrate earning the highest SBAC scores in the Imperial Valley! (Click here for photos of the assembly!)

The morning of Friday, October 13th, third through eighth grade students and teachers celebrated their amazing SBAC results from the 2016-2017 school year. Students cheered for their grade level and participated in performance task spirit activities. McCabe had 13 students who earned a perfect school in Language Arts or Math. Three of those students earned perfect scores in BOTH categories!! Way to go, McCabe!!

1st grade is ready to SET SAIL!!

Mrs. Gray's classroom was all a buzz as the students collaborated and worked together to bring their designs to life. Ask —> Imagine —> Plan —> Create —> Improve ~ Our little engineers did an amazing job this week! They spent the last few days learning about the engineering process of boat-building. Take a peak at pictures of the students working together in teams and testing their boats! What a success!

Mrs. Gray's students kicked off Tuesday (10/3) by using Google Classroom to expand on their buoyancy and density lesson. Ideas have been shared, plans have been drawn, and building is underway! First time engineers are doing great!

Professional Development ~ September 27, 2017

Wednesday, September 27th was McCabe's first professional development day. This year, students have 7 additional minimum days to allow time for administration to hold trainings and workshops for the teaching staff. As part of ICOE's Educational Services staff, Dorene Johnson assisted McCabe's teaching staff with accumulating and processing student assessment scores.

Mr. Garcia's STEM Classes Support Students Affected by Hurricane Irma

Mr. Garcia's STEM classes "adopted" an 8th grade class affected by Hurricane Irma. Students collected and sent over 400 pounds of school supplies and backpacks to Briscoe Junior High in Richmond, TX. The donations mailed on 9/26 had perfect timing as school resumed on Monday, 9/25.

THANK YOU to our Corfman 7th grade class for their generous donations and to the packing crew who donated their lunch time to pack up the supplies for shipment. WAY TO GIVE BACK!!

Mrs. Gray’s first grade 21st Century Learners spent the afternoon learning about computer hardware and software, discussing digital citizenship and basic functions. The students did great on their first visit to the computer lab!

Hurricane Lakecia Hits 7th Grade STEM!!

Mr. Garcia's 7th grade STEM class took on "Hurricane Lakecia" on September 14, 2017. The students built structures to demonstrate how buildings withstand the effects of hurricane levels and strengths. Take a look at the videos below as Mr. Garcia does his best at destroying the structures!

The students chose to name their hurricane after Lakecia Gunter who became a leader at Intel's famous R&D labs and was recipient #11 of the Society of Women Engineers Prism Award.

PeaceBuilder Committee Gets the Ball Rolling!

McCabe's PeaceBuilder Committee kicks of the year with posters for the upcoming PeaceBuilder assemblies. (pictures attached) The character trait for the month of September is "Responsibility". As we begin the the school year, responsibility is a character trait McCabe teachers strive to instill in their students. Students are responsible for completing their homework on time, having their lunch, backpack, instrument, and sports equipment packed and ready for school each morning. Responsible students become responsible adults!
